COSHH assessments for cleaning companies

Cleaning companies use more hazardous products than almost any other small business, often across many client sites. Your staff need assessments that match each product and task, and clients increasingly ask to see them.

Common hazards

  • Corrosive toilet cleaners, descalers and drain products
  • Bleach and chlorine releasing products, and the risk of mixing them with acids
  • Degreasers and floor strippers with high pH
  • Spray mist in small, poorly ventilated rooms
  • Dermatitis from frequent wet work and glove misuse
  • Lone working and decanting into unlabelled bottles

How EasyCOSHH helps

  • Bulk SDS upload: a draft assessment for every product in your range in one go
  • Duplicate an assessment when the same task uses a different product
  • A COSHH file per client site, downloaded as one PDF for the client or your tender pack
  • A read-only link or QR label in each cleaning cupboard so staff can check the controls
  • On the Max plan, up to 3 colleagues (for example supervisors) can share your account

Client products

If you use a client's products, you still need assessments for your staff. Ask the client for the Safety Data Sheets, or search for them from our product box.

Questions

Do I need a separate assessment for each site?

Not always. If the product and the way it's used are the same, one assessment can cover several sites. Where conditions differ (for example a small unventilated washroom) adapt it or duplicate it for that site.

Will this help with tenders?

Buyers often ask for COSHH assessments and a list of products. A COSHH file PDF with a register index is a tidy way to provide both.

Important

EasyCOSHH is a tool, not professional advice. You must check each assessment against the supplier's Safety Data Sheet and your actual work, adapt it and sign it off. For high-risk substances (carcinogens, asbestos, lead, respiratory sensitisers such as isocyanates) use a competent person. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by HSE.
